Diversity

A dictionary definition of diversity shows the following:

  1. The fact or quality of being diverse; difference.
  2. A point or respect in which things differ.
  3. Variety or multiformity:

In our world, diversity has come to mean something different. It is the title we give to the idea that we must respect the differing beliefs or behaviors of others.

In our practice, it has come to mean something different as we, in the name of diversity, force people to accept behaviors, policies and standards that violate their personal morals and beliefs. If you think that sounds harsh, I invite you to investigate some of the cases currently being litigated.

In Minnesota, two state employees won in federal court after five years of litigation following reprimands they received for reading their Bibles during a state mandated diversity training session. A Colorado man was fired for refusing to sign an acknowledgement that included a tolerance clause which he felt was against his personal religious belief. There are many more such cases I could point out to you.

Many employees report behaviours which they find offensive, yet cannot complain about because to do so would put them at odds with the diversity policies as practiced in their workplaces. In my own workplace, I see women (and sometimes men) dressing in ways I find offensive. I hear language that offends me and discussions on matters that should never (in my opinion) be held in public. I don't want to know that one of my co-workers has this or that sexual quirk. I'd prefer not to hear the foul language of many of the people who work for my company. I am talking about women as well as men. Sometimes I think the women are the worst. It is like we have claimed our equality in the most vulgar and offensive form available.

I find all these things deeply disturbing, yet cannot get a hearing for my point of view because to give me a hearing would be to violate someone elses "diversity". There are such things as appropriate workplace behaviors and those should reflect the accepted social norms. Uh-oh .... no help there, I guess.
