Work Force Dynamics

Changes in the work environment have become the norm. Corporations constantly launch new initiatives designed to increase productivity and profits. On the job stress levels increase to new highs. When people discuss their jobs, it is mostly in negative terms. What is wrong with this picture?

Over the last 25 - 30 years there has been a radical shift in work environments and attitudes. Graduates of the 60s and 70s expected to land a job with a corporation and climb the corporate ladder until retirement. Attitudes toward employees seem to have taken a radical swing as the 20th Century wound to a close. Our vocabularies were expanded to include terms such as Reduction In Force and Voluntary Separation.

Today's graduates look for positions that will enhance their resume, never considering staying in the same job. Employers are more interested in the bottom line than in retaining experienced employees. The longer they retain an employee, the higher they count the cost of benefits. Experience holds little value in today's workplace.

As employees feel less valued by their employers, they give less in terms of loyalty and productivity. It is amazing that the corporate world never counts the cost of this loss. Employees feel free to leave a job with no notice and it doesn't seem to count all that much against them in the workplace of the 21st century. What happened to that work ethic that used to be such a feature of the American economy?

When you weigh current employee and employer attitudes, it doesn't seem so surprising that our economy is in recession. All the government programs and tinkering can never replace the confidence and loyalty that used to be such a staple of the American workplace.
