My Philosophy

I never thought a lot about my philosophy of life. I am usually too busy living life to dissect it. But it seems I run into a lot of negative people out there ... people who just cannot or will not be happy. It seems they are always on the lookout for what life is going to throw at them. They're so busy looking for the next bad thing that is bound to happen to them that they miss all the good things that happen in the meantime.

Maybe all those sales training courses I have taken and written have affected my psyche. I have come to really believe some of the subtitles from those courses ...

Attitude is Everything ... Yes, I believe it is. It's a matter of how you look at things. Do you see the glass as half empty? Or half full? Do you expect that each day will bring something good and wonderful? Or are you just waiting for the ax to fall? Do you see interaction with coworkers and superiors as opportunities to learn? Or do you think they are out to get you?

Enthusiasm is contagious ... if you have it, others will catch it. This doesn't mean that you have to become the office cheerleader. It does mean that if you face challenges with a positive attitude and if you interact in a pleasant way, you will gain positive results.

You catch more bears with honey than with vinegar ... well that one didn't come from a sales course, but it's true just the same. Think about the people you enjoy being around the most. I bet you describe them as interesting, having a great sense of humor, fun to be with. They probably have smiles on their faces more often than not.

I think if you want to be someone who people like to be around, you need to look at those people and see what traits they display. It seems to me that you will find them to be optimists; people who expect good things to happen; who see the glass as half full. And because of their attitude, they are better able to cope with bad things when they happen.

I would never tell you that you will always have clear sailing ... the best sailors experience squalls. But you will weather them a lot easier if you expect to sail beyond them. If you expect to sink, you just might.

I expect to sail on!
